The patient one. The one who could handle a lot without unraveling. And now you’re lying awake at 2am with your heart racing over nothing, snapping at people you love over something small, feeling a low hum of dread you can’t quite explain and wondering what happened to you.

Nothing happened to you. Something is happening in you. And once you understand it, it makes complete sense.

Your nervous system is not broken, but it is communicating with you. It’s also responding to a hormone shift that has cost it it’s resilience and that might be a good thing.

Progesterone is often called the calming hormone, and for good reason. It binds to GABA receptors in the brain. The same receptors that anti-anxiety medications target. When progesterone is present in healthy amounts, your nervous system has a natural buffer. You can handle stress without it hijacking your entire day.

In perimenopause, progesterone is the first hormone to decline and it drops unpredictably. Some months you have enough, some months you don’t, and your nervous system feels every fluctuation. Without that buffer, your brain’s threat-detection system runs hotter. Things that used to roll off you now stick. Your fuse is shorter not because your personality changed, but because the neurological cushion that was absorbing the impact is thinner.

Next, estrogen, which also supports serotonin and dopamine production, starts swinging. On high-estrogen days you might feel almost normal. On low days, the fog rolls in, the anxiety spikes, and the irritability is sharp enough to surprise even you.

But here’s what nobody is telling you: stress is making it worse in a way that compounds daily.

Every time your stress response activates, every tense meeting, every scroll through your phone, every moment of low-grade worry…your body releases cortisol. And cortisol has a cost that gets paid in minerals.

Specifically, magnesium and potassium.

Magnesium alone is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in your body, including sleep regulation, muscle recovery, blood sugar balance, and — critically — the production of your sex hormones. Every stress response pulls from that reserve. And when the reserve runs low, your body has to make a choice: use what’s left to manage the ongoing stress, or use it to support hormone production. Your body will always choose the survival hormones – cortisol, adrenaline over reproductive hormones.

In perimenopause, when your hormonal system is already under pressure, that trade-off gets very expensive very fast. You’re not just tired and anxious. You’re running a deficit that keeps getting deeper. A deficit that starts to impact your ability to recover from your workouts, fall asleep and stay asleep, regulate blood sugar and more.

This is why so many women in perimenopause feel like they’re doing everything right — eating well, exercising, trying to sleep — and still feel terrible. The stress physiology is quietly draining the resources their hormones need to function.

The fix isn’t always a bigger wellness practice. Sometimes it’s smaller, repeated signals throughout the day.

Here’s something I teach every woman I work with: you don’t need a 45-minute meditation or a yoga class three times a week to start shifting your nervous system. Those things are wonderful, but they’re not always realistic and if you’re already depleted, adding more to your to-do list creates its own stress.

What actually moves the needle is interrupting the stress response many times throughout the day with small, repeatable signals that tell your brain it’s safe.

Your nervous system responds to pattern. If the pattern is constant low-grade activation, it learns to stay there. But if you interrupt that pattern consistently — even briefly, even imperfectly — you start to shift the baseline.

Some of the most effective nervous system resets take under 60 seconds:

A slow exhale that’s longer than your inhale (this directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system). Stepping outside for natural light before you check your phone in the morning. Humming or singing quietly…the vibration stimulates the vagus nerve. Putting your hands under cool water and breathing through it deliberately. Pausing before you open your email and taking three grounding breaths first.

These aren’t gimmicks. They’re physiological pattern interrupts. Done repeatedly throughout the day, they stop the mineral drain before it compounds, and they signal to your brain that the threat level is lower than it thinks. Over time, that changes how your nervous system responds to everything.

A side note…as important as it to learn to send safety signals they can’t make up for completely ignoring the stressors in your life. Midlife just might be the wakeup call you’ve needed to start using your voice. It’s a good time to pause and reflect on where you’ve been ignoring your own needs. How many times you’ve pretended you weren’t mad when you had something to say. Swearing you’re fine when you in fact are very much not fine. Refusing to ask for help because you don’t “want to be a burden.” Saying yes to things that make you miserable because you think you should or you’re worried what someone will think. Never setting a boundary because…well, you’ve never set a boundary. Something to think about. I work through life audits with my clients to help them find the areas that unconsciously (or sometimes consciously) keeping them stuck.

What bloodwork usually misses and what I look at instead.

Most women going through this get standard bloodwork. Maybe their hormones are checked once, maybe they’re told everything looks “normal,” and they leave without answers.

What bloodwork doesn’t show is the mineral terrain underneath — the magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, copper, and zinc ratios that determine how well your hormones can actually function at the cellular level. A hormone can be present in the blood and still not be getting into the cells and doing its job if the mineral environment isn’t supporting it.

This is why I use Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) with the women I work with. It’s a non-invasive test that gives us a 90-day window into what’s been happening inside your cells. How your adrenal glands are responding to stress, where your mineral reserves actually stand, and what’s depleted. It turns the guesswork into a map.

From there, we’re not just addressing symptoms. We’re addressing the conditions that are allowing those symptoms to exist. It’s a 3 part strategy. 1. Identify what’s depleted and out of balance and work on replenishing through nutrition and custom mineral supplementation. 2. Identify your main stressors (mental, physical, emotional, nutritional) and tweak your lifestyle to stop the drain. 3. Retrain your nervous system to move between parasympathetic and sympathetic with mini nervous system resets throughout the day.

What working with me actually looks like.

If you’re reading this and recognizing yourself. The anxiety that came out of nowhere, the irritability you can’t fully explain, the feeling that your body is running on fumes. I want you to know this is solvable. Not by white-knuckling it, not by adding random supplements and hoping something sticks, but by actually looking at the full picture: your hormones, your minerals, your lifestyle, and how they’re all interacting.

This is the work I do in my 3-month and 6-month coaching programs. We run the right labs, we build a protocol that’s specific to your body, we support your nervous system from the ground up, and for women who are candidates, I now offer BHRT coordination through my licensed medical partner as part of the program.

If you want to understand what’s actually driving your symptoms before you decide on next steps, I offer a Hormone Clarity Call — a focused 20-minute conversation where we look at your specific picture together. It’s $49, and if you choose to move forward and work with me, that $49 is applied to your package.

You don’t have to keep guessing. There’s a reason you feel this way, and there’s a path through it.

[Book your Hormone Clarity Call — $49 → insert link]

You used to be the calm one.
